Hard, Easy Breeze

Hi,

Just had a couple of meetings today with some good folks. We were talking about the challenges of discipline – going back and forth on some of the issues that make it hard to be a good enterpriser today- a good SME! One of the things that Iave always had a feeling about is the biggest competitor for the enterprising mindset. The biggest drain on your creativity, on your a?get to ita? attitude, on your a?get it donea? as opposed to thinking and planning – the doing and done. The world, they celebrate to the Nth degree initiative. But again, we all know they only pay for finish-iative, and thereas a BIG difference between the two!

I remember the first television on our street (it just happened to be at our place), and gatherings every Sunday night to watch the Ed Sullivan show – most of you of course wouldnat know what that was! The television has become, for many of us, a default… a virus… a disease to be frank! Not so much of the online virus variety – it has nothing to do with the stuff that gets INTO your box, itas how the box that you use (your computer or tv) gets used.

There are so many things you can do with online games, gambling, and such (and other less reputable pursuits). There are serious, serious drains on our time – and time is in very short supply for all of us! Itas at a premium. Any time thatas spent doing some of those things (the virus deals) can take away from the new enterprise mindset; solution finding, creativity, new opportunity expansion. You know, high level thinking, seventy thousand foot perspectives. All this can be sucked away and the day is gone, once again. An evening has been spent doing something that is less than fully engaging or productive. I understand the need for downtime. I understand the need for refueling, refreshing, and getting a few laughs in your day. There are lots of vehicles for that sort of the to happen – you can find them on a television or a box (computer). But the real challenge is focusing on the long-term greater good, and making certain that those diseases or those viruses donat take over.

Itas HARD to be good today… EASY to be average… and a BREEZE to suck. Donat suck. Itas HARD to be good, itas hard to discipline yourself to a daily regimen that does in fact feed your faith, feed your family, feed your fiscal opportunities or your enterprise discipline. Itas EASY to be average, easy to go along and do only whatas necessary and needed – not what could be done to generate (Client) rave and new (enterprise) opportunity. And a BREEZE to suck – where you just do the base minimum… where youare waiting to be told… or waiting for it to be brought to you on a silver platter.

a?The world needs followers. Follow-ship when done well is wonderful stuff, but the world desperately, direly needs leaders – and itas hard to be a good one! So, my very best to each and every one of you who try day by day to be whatas needed.

Good planting! Good harvesting! Good day!

Worthy Ideals

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMRYxD5vkls

The progressive realization of a worthy ideal – this is the definition of success, by one of the great masters. In fact, you can listen to him live… well, not live, recorded – The Strangest Secret (by Earl Nightingale). I highly recommend you find it – itas available online. But the progressive realization of a worthy ideal is the statement of (definition of) success.

When you take a look at the end of some days – and we all have these kinds of days – you wonder/shake your head, looking at the tally, saying a?This?… this was the worthy ideal I was progressing towards/I was realizing today?a? Itas not always the case, but one thing to always keep in mind is a?greater good, long terma?. The a?greater good, long terma? is what should help us define and devise todayas tactic and strategy.

Thereas a wonderful story about three little fellas out in the snow, freshly fallen. Here we have some freshly fallen snow here from last night. One of them started a challenge to the others – a?I can walk a straighter line than you!a?

Boys – you know (boys), they have to have competition built into almost everything. So there he is, looking straight down, heel-toe, heel-toe, heel-toe. And his buddy watches – a?a little crooked.a? He says a?I can do better.a? So, heas walking beside the heel-toe, heel-toe line, and he does a little better job – he takes longer strides.

The third little boy, without much in the way of a?fanfarea?, starts his line. What he does is he looks across the field of freshly fallen snow, spies a light post, looks at it – and it alone – and begins to walk. And of course, you know, who had the straighter line? It was in fact the little fella that was looking up, straight ahead, focused on something in the distance.

a?Greater good, long terma? will help – I hope – make some of those decisions of the a?What I could do todaya?… what I need to start, and what I need to stop.

The progressive realization of a worthy ideal. My best wishes in the pursuit of this!

Big, Hairy & Audacious Imagineering

http://youtu.be/i_5clS45uAE

Hi! Start of a new year – Happy New Year!

Donat believe the prognosticators, the Mayans just ran out of rock… thatas why they PLANNED on the world ending (in 2012).

Big, Hairy & Audacious goals! Iam sure youave heard that expression before. The challenge with big, hairy and audacious is the stretching. Literally, the IMAGINEering stretch. Most folks are comfortable with bits and pieces, and they celebrate, and get in the habit of celebrating (these).

What they need – as we all do – on a regular basis – is in the major arenas of your life (mine are Faith…Family…Fiscals) you NEED a big, hairy and audacious goal. Now for instance – faith – for me… Iam going to die at one hundred and twenty plus 1 day… and be met at the gates with, you know, a little bit of fan-fare – well, at least one or two people are going to know my name, anyway!

Family – exactly WHAT are you thinking of when it comes to major events in a familyas life. The kids, the grandkids, all that kind of stuff. Picture it! You can close your eyes every once in a while and take time to put colour, verve, energy, sound, taste and thrill into that sort of that!

Fiscal – pick a number! (laughter) Go ahead, pick a number! You donat have to share it with anyone, but you should know what big, hairy and audacious means in your life – there’s nothing wrong with that.

Then get in the discipline of the a?month-to-montha?. I, as some people know, die every thirty days! I live my life in month-tight compartments, because in a month you can accomplish some SPECTACULAR stuff, and in a fiscal sense, you can hit reasonable targets with deadlines. But month-by-month, you can start with very small steps on the way to big, hairy and audacious, and you might be surprised that after that moth of commitment to dumb stuff… like walking up stairs and no elevators… like eliminating certain foods – sugars, chocolate bars and french fries.. Youad be surprised at the end of thirty days how (well, you need to celebrate!), but how comfortable you tend to get at a?sticking to ita?. So big, hairy and audacious to begin with. Most important, start at that seventy thousand foot perspective (with big, hairy & audacious), and second, the month-to-month discipline – just the baby steps. Stick to it for just a month at a time, you can do it!

70,000 Feet – Strategic Perspective

http://youtu.be/A5CPpOFVcvA

This is quite a while ago…

The first time I went to Jamaica, I left the resort I was at and caught a ride, a helicopter ride. Wonderful fella the pilot, and there were about, I donat know, half a dozen of us in an old surplus army helicopter. We started flying around. The minute he got us in, he just scrafed the top of a grove of palm trees. Of course the palm fronds were coming in and slapping against our thighs and our calves and stuff. And of course people were shouting a?Hey! Hey! Higher! Highera? (laughter). He was smiling away, and eventually we got higher and higher and higher. Before you know it, we could see the pretty much the whole city we were on top of – I think it was Ocho Rios. He kept going higher and higher until we FINALLY got to a place where literally we could pretty much see the whole island. Now the higher we got – of course, he was whipping like MAD across the top of those palm fronds, and the higher we got, the slower it seemed we were going. I shouted a?Weare slowing down now?a? And he said a?Same speed, man. Same speed.a?

The higher you get, the slower things tend to appear. Theyare still moving ( but seemingly not as fast ). But most of us have flown at thirty-five-to-forty thousand, I was on a Concord once, and you are up to sixty or so thousand feet. There you can actually SEE the horizon. Itas a wonderful sight! The curvature of the Earth is clear, I should say, not the horizon. But the curvature of the earth, right up there at the edge of our atmosphere.

Ten thousand feet beyond that is seventy thousand feet. At seventy thousand feet, I mean, EVERYTHING is a dead stop. Dead still. And at seventy thousand, you can see BEYOND the curvature – whatas coming beyond the curve. Thatas where strategic planning starts. Itas SEEING that which others donat… understanding all-the-while that you may be wrong, But starting from that perspective, taking a leap, thatas what true a?visioneeringa? is all about. Taking a leap of faith, and committing and resolving to a cause of consequence.

So, when youare going about the day-by-day, if itas possible, think about what itas ( what you’re doing at that time ) plugged into – what are they higher levels. What is it at the five hundred foot, the three thousand, the thirty thousand! See if you can find a way to take yourself out of the game for a while, and start thinking about the seventy thousand foot perspective. The things that are beyond belief, truly UN-BELIEVABLE!

Start to craft full bodied pictures of you engaged in something well beyond the possible! And see if it doesnat add some energy, and some drive, some motivation in the moments that are NOT the real pleasant ones, as we all have ( from time to time ). See if it doesnat – when you plug back into that – give you just a little bit of gumption and follow-through.

Slip Streaming

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIJO5L0fM00

Often times when Iam driving, Iall slip into a slipstream right behind a transport trailer. And as many of you know, it saves money – it saves energy. And when I say saves, I mean I pay less to go the distance.

Iam often reminded that I come from a very good stock. My mother and father are, I believe, the best parents anyone could have been blessed with, and many times in conversations and meetings people hear me say a?My father always said…a?. And Iall bring up a few of his sayings like a?Son of a bear!a? or a?Man oh shevitz!a?, and itas more than his colloquial terms… itas his wisdom. His wisdom is ageless. Itas as many of us know with parents, mentors and teachers. Itas a combination of all that they have shared or all that they have passed on through deed and act that allows us to discern a little bit differently… intelligently, to assess more effectively, and to decide more resolutely.

We often times forget that it is all those who come before us, that paved the way, that provide a slipstream for us… so that we can move more quickly and efficiently than those who donat pay homage, who donat pay respect, to those who came before them.

There are many… we know not names and we know not faces of those in many sciences, many different fields… who have paved ways that allow us today to live the life we do with the freedoms and conveniences we enjoy… the gifts of technology and lifestyle that lifetimes of generations before us never ever dreamed of. WE OWE THEM!

So perhaps in conversations in the next little while, you might want to give CREDIT by NAME to those who have in fact came before. Those who did in fact, plant seeds… who infused you with something more than who you were about to be, by giving you their observation, or articulating in a different way, that which you have never felt or seen or experienced before. And by their sharing, they allowed you to slip into a pathway that was a little less challenging, with a little less wind in your face.

RADIO & other invisible SIGNALS

RADIO & other invisible SIGNALS

You hear that? (radio playing in the background) Thatas NPR. I know there are lots of podcasts I listen to, as many of you do. I would recommend wholeheartedly you do, if you drive 12,000km a year – which is not very far – itas about 8,000 miles – but they say thatas what the average Canadian drives. Itas quite a remarkable amount of time – the equivalent of a college diploma, each year. So filling your vehicle – that drive time – with important information from leaders, thinkers – of the day and of yesterday – wouldnat be a bad idea.

But going back to the radio signal from NPR. You probably donat hear it right nowa There you hear it againa and there itas gone. Now, the touch of a button allows, with the particular piece of science & technology, allows you to pick up on what is presently there: wave-lengths/radio signals that are quite literally jammed in space bombarding you. You choose to listen to one or another station. If youave flipped through the channels you know that theyare all out there, ready to be received.

In life, we often times end up on stations that arenat good ones. We listen to the wrong stuff – we donat do or accomplish all that we could, because the station weare on, or the signals we are picking up on, are not the ones that are challenging or engaging us at the highest possible level. We need to be aware that there are vibes that are constantly accessible, and they are not all good. We have to clue into the good ones, pay attention to them, and hang around them, make certain our technology – our receptors, our signal receivers are strong enough so we continue to pick up on them. That means not just the radio we listen to, the podcasts, the sites we surf, the people we hang around with, the TIME we spent in some circumstances as opposed to other circumstancesa all of these reflect our choices that in their own small way determine whether or not we are being fed the good stuff, or the right stuff.

Also remember, as youare driving down the highway – perhaps you are listening to a radio signal – passing by power lines or cell towers as well (and the signal is interrupted). Thatas another subject all on its own – whatas actually out there thatas interfering in perhaps a dangerous way. But remember, there are all kinds of signals that CAN interrupt – that CAN in fact infect the good stuff.

So, do your very best by choosing the right reading, the right mentors, the right partners, the right players you work with, play with, socialize with – to ensure the signaling is the right stuff and your receptors/receivers are in fact in top shape, So youare doing your doing your level best, and get the best stuff on a regular basis.

WE not ME discipline

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-7-iiFuaRo

Most of us have a couple of these, and for many people their strongest digit of the five is their thumb. Weave got studies that show that as strong as you thumb may be, your palm – your whole fist – is 40 times stronger than your strongest digit. 40 times stronger! So thatas 8 times five – 5 digits – 8 times the individual strength of each, together.

When it comes to the last little while, I spent some time in San Diego at a convention, and just finished up a board meeting a minute ago. The power of people working together is so much, SO MUCH more impressive, so much more overwhelming than individuals doing excellent work on their own.

WE not ME, pays huge corporate dividend. Minds working in a single direction, purposed mission have UNSTOPPABLE power – once they get momentum, once they get moving. So, part of the daily, weekly, monthly, hourly discipline for each and every one of us should be the We not Me mindset.

How can I spend more time, more of my efforts, more of my focus, working IN HARMONY with, as opposed to a?on my owna about. The consequences are far removed from even the very best of individuals hard at work. Together, there is a great deal more.

Good planting. Good harvesting. Good day.

The world is my Oyster – 70 million SMEs strong

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbAXECrF-Pw

We’ve all heard the expression, “The world is my oyster”. Well, if you’re an SME (small & medium enterpriser) – the bedrock foundation of the enterprise world – do you know what that means? It means odds are that there are 70 million prospects out there. Just for you…

70 million other SMEs. Folks who are running passionate, orchestrated organizations looking for better, faster, more effective, top revenue driving, cost-cutting, leading edge generating solutions… products that you have sitting in a warehouse or in your cloud configuration somewhere.

70 million prospects! That’s an awful lot of oyster for anybody. The only thoughts we should wake up with, go to bed with, and talk about all day long is “How do we capture MORE of that world of 70 million SMEs today… with this tactic, this strategy, than we did yesterday?!?
